Exploring A New Frontier: Wildside’s Latest Adventure in Hoedspruit

At Wildside, we believe every step into nature is a step into the vast, unfolding narrative of the earth itself. After considerable effort and thoughtful negotiation, we’re thrilled to introduce a groundbreaking day walk experience in the enchanting Hoedspruit area. This venture hasn’t been rushed; it has matured through the cultivation of strong local partnerships and deep, mutual understanding, ensuring that every participant’s experience is both genuine and impactful.

The Genesis of a Trail

The journey towards launching this new trail was marked by meticulous planning and careful steps. Yesterday’s event was not just another day at the office but a pivotal moment for our team. We conducted a dry run of the trail with some of the lodge staff—a mix of guides, trackers, and managers who are as passionate about the bush as we are. Though I can’t reveal the exact location just yet, I urge you to “watch this space,” as the saying goes.

The morning of the First Trail Walk

The day began with that familiar flutter of nerves that tickles the stomach of even the most seasoned walkers when they step into new territory. It had been over a month since my last bushwalk. Despite this, my anticipation was tinged with the confidence that the rhythm of the walk would soon feel like second nature again. Joining me were five staff members from the lodge, including enthusiastic guides and expert trackers, as well as three companions of my own, among them my wife Lauren, who captured the day in photos.

As we boarded the game viewer that would take us to our starting point, I felt the weight of responsibility. Though I have only held my lead trails guide qualification for a year, the presence of seasoned professionals in our group was both an advantage and a formidable challenge. Leading a trail in such an esteemed company was daunting but also an invaluable opportunity to grow and learn.

Embracing Collaboration and Knowledge

Before we embarked, I made it clear during our briefing that despite their vast experience, today the trackers would need to follow protocol and walk in line, as guests do. Their understanding was evident in their wry smiles. This mutual respect set the tone for the day.

Trackers hold a special place in the wildlife observation hierarchy. Their skills, often honed from a young age, reflect a deep, almost innate understanding of the natural world. This encounter reminded me of the bush saying that grows ever more resonant with each day spent under its vast skies: “The more time you spend in the bush getting to know it, the more you realise how little you know.”

Our walk was peaceful, punctuated only by sightings of small game and a few hippos lounging in the Big Dam, our destination. In an environment where knowledge could easily become a competitive edge, our experience morphed into a collaborative learning session. The trackers, with their deep, intuitive connection to the land, guided us through the cloudy morning, pointing out subtle signs of wildlife like the distant alarm calls of guineafowl.

In turn, I shared my knowledge of safety protocols, guest management, and environmental interpretation. This exchange was not merely about passing information but a profound mutual acknowledgement of skills and mastery of the bushcraft.

Looking to the Future

This successful dry run has paved the way for the official launch of our day walks, which will include morning, evening, and full-day options. We are excited about the potential of these walks to not only provide unique, unforgettable encounters with nature but also to foster a deeper appreciation for the skills of those who read the bush with such fluency experiencing first-hand just how in-depth and intimate a guided trail walk can be.

We invite you to come and walk on the Wildside, to step into a world where every trail tells a story, and every encounter with wildlife is a learning moment. It’s more than just a walk; it’s an exploration of the wild, an education, and a journey into the heart of nature.

Stay tuned as we release the exact details of this trail and begin taking bookings.
